Chinese New Year Cupcakes

It's that time of year again! The one time a year I bust out the Chinese-ness to sell out and collect those red envelopes!

In staying with tradition (that being I'm a terrible Asian), I had to be reminded of Chinese New Year at work this year. To redeem myself, I made some WTSM dragon cupcakes.

They're super easy and I wish I had taken some pictures of the process, but I should be able to explain it without too much difficulty...

Each dragon is made up of four cupcakes.

To start, I just put a big blob of icing in the center of each cupcake, then smash it down flat in some red sugar to create a smooth (and sparkly!) surface to decorate on.

For the scales, I used a rose tip to make overlapping petal-shapes. Then, I cut a small tip in a bag and made spikes down the sides of the dragon and down its back.

For the face, I made the shape of the head, then added two blobs of white icing, topped with black m&ms for the eyes.

Add spikes around the sides of the face.

Add three blobs of icing underneath the eyes (in the same color as the body) - the one in the center should be larger than the two on the sides. This is going to be the nose of the dragon.

Add eyebrows - I did those in blue and then eyelashes, in a black icing over top of the blue.

Lastly, make some teeth with white and some of those whisker-y things (shown above in the lime green).

That's it! Happy Chinese New Year y'all!
